Defendec takes the next step with TALOS

Defendec is proud to be a part of the TALOS (Transportable Autonomous Patrol for Land Border Surveillance), an international research project co-funded by the European Commission (EC) that may very well change the way borders are protected in the future. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n°218081.

The main idea is to use unmanned vehicles (in the air and on the ground), supervised by command and control centre to do most of the patrolling on border. Read more about TALOS here:

Defendec joined the project early on as a partner to industry/research giants such as Aselsan,  Hellenic Aerospace Industry, Israel Aerospace Industries, PIAP, VTT, STM and others. In close cooperation with VTT and STM Defendec is responsible for designing and implementing WMKS (World Model Knowledge Store) – a spatial database that holds key information about the environment where the unmanned vehicles are operating. Think maps, only in 3D and with a lot of additional data.

In June, TALOS held its second Review Meeting in Warsaw, that also ended the first iteration of development of WMKS. Both VTT and STM demonstrated application software, that directly relies on the services of WMKS, offered through a protocol called JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems). The database and JAUS interface part of WMKS were mostly built by Defendec team and we are proud to announce that the demo was a complete success.

We are all excited about challenges that need to be improved. The very first version of WMKS only handles a subset of the real-world objects that need to be in the final version. As usual, additional features are required and it goes without saying that everything needs to be thoroughly and strictly tested, so we can be confident in the quality of our work.
